Introducing the ReadWriter case study
This post is just going to outline a fictional project that I'll be using to set a context for some of the problems and solutions that I go through on this blog. When solving problems, it's important to justify why you have done things a certain way and having a particular scenario in mind will help us do this.
I'll get to demonstrate problems I've come across during my job as a developer who is lead by the design work that I do.
The scenario
A company ReaderWriter is wanting to launch a new social media platform for book enthusiasts. People can join to leave comments and get recommendations for new books to read, as well as and follow favourite authors, who can also join. it will allow authors to connect directly to their user base.
It also allows fledging or aspiring writers to post things to a wider audience. They hope that in the future it could even be used to help connect people who want to work in the book business i.e. writers, managers, illustrators etc (a premium author/ professional feature).
Premium users can also get a sneak peak at exclusive author content and win prizes.
How will I tackle this?
As with real projects, there'll be several stages to this, as well as changes in requirements and more will be wanted from the 'clients' as we go along. Here's what we will be the focusing on solving during upcoming blog posts:
  1. The company believes the ReadWriter concept could work and be immensely popular, but they need to show it's can to potential investors and possible stakeholders. They come to you without any previous designs, hoping you can provide the initial work to get them started.
  2. In particular, they want to see user pages, author pages and social media capabilities, as well as how these pages can work together to show a first cut of their vision for the platform.
Moving forward
This page will be updated as more related blog articles are added, as well as when new events occur in our project. Be sure to keep checking every couple of weeks to see how the it progresses!
